Production Angels – an Innovative Concept for Industrialization and Up-scaling

Project time: 2017 – 2018

Budget: 690 000 kr

Funding: SIP Produktion2030

Purpose and goal

The project Production Angels aims at supporting startups and SMEs in industrialization of new products. Efficient industrialization improves the connection and integration between R&D and production which strengthens the development and production capabilities, increases competitiveness and keeps jobs in Sweden. The concept Production Angels focuses on the part of the value chain sometimes called “the death valley”, with a similar method to “Business Angels”. Here, a concrete industrialization case is matched with a supporting panel of production experts.

Results and expected effects

The goal is to achieve practical results for Pharem as a pilot case in the form of expert support for the industrialization of the specific product. A first proposal of methodology will be tested to perform the Production Angel concept in a larger scale in Södertälje Science Park. The concept has a potential to be scaled up on a national basis as a new component in the Swedish innovation system. The project addresses the UN global goal 9, specifically 9.2 och 9.4.

Approach and implementation

The concept Production Angels is tested in a concrete pilot with the startup company Pharem Biotech in Södertälje together with KTH, Södertälje Science Park and IVA. Pharem is in the industrialization phaser of a sustainable product. Exclusively invited production experts (5-7) is invited to the panel where Pharem is presenting its industrialization case. A first version of a Production Angel methodology is tested in the pilot. A number of interesting research questions are expected to come out of the process.

Tailored Tool Surfaces for Robust and Sustainable Hot Stamping

Tooling constitutes a significant part in the economical investment of the hot stamping process. Significant benefits in production economy and environmental benefits can be attained by improving the tribological performance in hot forming operations of automotive components. The main idea of this project is to create tailored tool surfaces on dies made from cheaper and easier to manufacture tool steel for the hot stamping of ultra-high strength steels.
