Robust injection moulding of automotive components with low environmental impact

Project time: 2018 – 2020

Budget: 6 417 740 kronor

Funding: Fordonsteknisk forskning och innovation, FFI

The goal is to increase the knowledge in robust design and manufacturing of components with high quality and low environmental impact.

Injection moulding offers fantastic possibilities to manufacture innovative and environmentally friendly products. However, it can sometimes be difficult to manufacture components with the desired surface finish (texture and gloss), and when bio-based or recycled plastics are used it is even more difficult to obtain components with the desired surface finish. Research activities within this area are therefore needed to improve the knowledge about design and manufacture of injection moulded automotive components with high quality and low environmental impact. An improved knowledge within this area will contribute to an improved competitiveness of the Swedish automotive industry. The project consists of 4 work packages. The first work package deals with administration and the last work package deals with utilization of the project results. The other two work packages, which constitute the core of the project, deals with simulation and environmentally friendly production.

Virtual PaintShop – Simulation of Oven Curing

The paintshop is often a bottleneck in production and the processes are fine-tuned based on testing on numerous prototypes. To meet the future demands there is a great need to improve the product preparation process. The aim is to develop methods, techniques and software, and supporting measurement methodology, for simulation of paint curing in IR and convective ovens. The goal is to assist the industry to further develop and optimize their surface treatment to be more energy and cost efficient; to have a shorter lead time in product development; and to give a higher product quality.
