VISP – Value and flexibility Impact analysis for Sustainable Production

Project time: 2018 – 2022

Budget: 8 748 000 kronor

Funding: Fordonsteknisk forskning och innovation, FFI

The goal is to develop decision support to handle increased flexibility in next generation platforms in the automotive industry.

The transport manufacturing industry is transforming, bringing in electrical and autonomous technologies into both products and production processes at a faster pace than the past. At the same time, manufacturers have invested in adopting product and production platforms as means to ensure efficiency cost and quality.

The higher rate of technological introduction is challenging the flexibility of the current product and production platforms. It is critical to understand what implications the introduction of novel technologies have 1) on the market 2) on the product platform and 3) on the production platform in advance of making decisions where cost is committed. Wrong decisions about the design of product platforms will result in major changes in production to accommodate technologies that are not compliant with current platforms. In a worst-case scenario, entire product platforms (and their associated production systems) will have to be substituted and re-developed every few years, resulting in a dramatic consumption of resources. VISP has the objective to develop a model-based decision support that allow manufacturers to offer a greater flexibility without comprising production efficiency.

The VISP methodology – captured in a tool – is designed to support the effective design of flexible and modular product and production architectures. Volvo Car Group and Volvo AB represent the OEM’s providing access to cases used to both set requirements for the VISP methodology, and serve as a means to continuously validate the emerging generic modelling capabilities. Chalmers build on their platform based development research and recent Value Driven Design methodology. A public and web-based version of the tool based on the VISP methodology is delivered, that will be used in seminars with other automotive companies and for student projects. Scientifically, results will be published in high quality peer reviewed scientific fora.
