By estimating the material conditions and system errors, adaptive fixture and process can minimize variations.

The project idea can be summarized as if the material conditions and other manufacturing variation sources can be known or accurately estimated, the necessary compensations or mitigation measures can be taken before their adverse effects occur. Several variation sources exist in manufacturing and extensive studies are made related to the processes and resources i.e., machine tools, fixtures, etc. However, the material conditions as those of residual stresses and cold flows (creep), are often not taken into account and their effects not monitored in a holistic way with the rest of variation sources. This is mainly because variation sources like residual stresses remain latent at a certain process stage and manifest themselves due relaxation at some down stream process that could result in high defect rates and need to install additional processes to counter act the effects, etc. These measures include, smart fixturing and dynamic process parameter settings. A cloud-based service is proposed, that monitors the principal variation sources, supports model based and data driven analyses, provide operational data and model repository.
