My research combines backcasting and forecasting in decision support tools that allow companies to adopt a unique and pioneering strategic approach to sustainability. The research is about, among other things, how sustainability criteria can be included in the specification of requirements and in risk management at different levels of a company, as well as how their effect can be visualised in concept development.
Sophie I. Hallstedt is Professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. In her research from 2008, a foundation for Sustainable Product Development (SPD) was initiated. Since then she has developed the research area both at Blekinge Institute of Technology and now also at Chalmers University of Technology. She has supervised several PhD students to doctoral degree within the area, initiated and developed courses and Master programmes within the field.
Sophie’s research has been nominated and qualified to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVAs) 100-list, both in 2020 and in 2023.
Sophie’s research is about how a strategic socio-ecological sustainability perspective can be integrated and implemented on strategic, tactical and operational levels in companies in order to be able to bring forward sustainable solutions. Several methods and approaches has come out from her research which for example, enhance the ability to measure: i) maturity level of sustainability implementation; ii) sustainability consequences of different solutions, and then; iii) quantify and visualize the progress of sustainability implementation. Sophie has the experience of doing action research and work in close collaboration with industry.
