Reducing maintenance-related waste

Reducing maintenance-related waste

Project time: 2013 – 2016

Budget: 9 746 000 SEK

Funding: FFI – Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation

The objective of the project is to develop a generic method that facilitates the Swedish automotive industry to work systematically to reduce its maintenance-related waste.

Industrial companies of today often direct their waste-reduction programs only to the value-adding functions without consideration to possible sub-optimizations. This is especially true when dealing with industrial maintenance. Production managers often demands maximized availability without reflection. Furthermore, it is common that most of today´s maintenance concepts are developed and focused on maximization of technical availability, while paying little notice to what is good enough from a production planning point of view, or without consideration to the maintenance cost or the associated waste. There is thus an untapped potential for automotive manufacturing industries in starting to work systematically in reducing maintenance-related waste. This research project has worked in close cooperation with industry in developing a methodology to facilitate systematic maintenance-related waste reduction in Swedish automotive manufacturing industry. The result of the project has been summarized in a handbook (in Swedish). If you have interest in the handbook you are welcome to contact below project participant.
