Organization of product-service development for global markets

Project time: 2013 – 2016

Budget: 5 359 000 kronor

To develop, implement and disseminate effective development methods for manufacturing companies to offer globally customized product-service offers

To maintain competitiveness and innovation, many Swedish industrial companies are striving to become global product-service providers where core products are complemented by services such as maintenance, IT monitoring, and control over the product lifecycle. Commercializing such offers will require new business models, processes for joint value creation and a high degree of customization to meet different requirements from heterogeneous global markets. This customer differentiation provides the opportunity for additional sales, but also significant costs.

The project aims to develop, implement and disseminate development methods on how manufacturing companies can provide global customized product-service offerings that meet conflicting and differentiated market requirements with high customer value without runaway development costs.

Through the project team, which includes expert academics, participating companies such as Volvo Construction Equipment and Sandvik Coromant as well as implementation-oriented knowledge intermediaries such as SICS and Automation Region, the project intends to develop a group of brand new product / service development methods.

Although previous research shows that successful companies increased their sales by 10-20% by becoming customer oriented product-service providers no literature on product-service systems (PSS) develops methods for the integration and customization of product/service offers, which is the approach closest to the one we intend to accomplish. PSS literature only acknowledges the complementary services needed but not how they should be implemented with a customer focused and globally differentiated approach at low costs.
