The course aims to provide an overview of Product-Service System (PSS), which is an innovation and production strategy focused on servitization, where value is created through a shift from selling a product to offering total customer solutions. PSS are appealing both from an economic and societal perspective, mainly as a means to better fulfil customer demands, be competitive in dynamic markets and meet sustainability targets.

The course aims to provide an overview of Product-Service System (PSS), which is an innovation and production strategy focused on servitization, where value is created through a shift from selling a product to offering total customer solutions. PSS are appealing both from an economic and societal perspective, mainly as a means to better fulfil customer demands, be competitive in dynamic markets and meet sustainability targets. The course will be conducted entirely online in 2022 due to the current pandemic situation.

Objective

The course objective is to teach students about on current strategies, methods and tools related to the design and implementation of Product-Service Systems in industry, as well as current and future areas of research in the PSS field.

Course content

Course organisation

The course is organised and examined by Blekinge Institute of Technology in collaboration with Luleå University of Technology, University of Turku, Technical University of Denmark and Tokyo Metropolitan University.  It builds on selected readings that describe different aspects related to the design and implementation of PSS in the manufacturing industry. It features a total of eight 2-hour online sessions, with individual/group work activities in between the sessions. It will also be possible for the students to book dedicated supervision meetings sessions to discuss the status and progress of their assignment with the main contact point for the course.

Examination

The submission and approval of the following assignments is required to pass the course :

Fee for late drop-out

This course is included in the Produktion2030 program, and it is therefore free of charge for PhD student members of Graduate School Produktion2030. However, in case of drop-out later than 3 weeks before course start, a fee of 1 000 SEK per course credit will be charged the student’s home institution.
