Virtual demonstrators for parallel product and production system development

Project time: 2013 – 2016

Budget: 6 000 000 kr

The project goal is a virtual demonstrator for parallel product and production system development enabling exploration and demonstration of new ways to execute such processes.

Innovative product development is one of six identified main Innovation Areas in the ´Strategic Innovation Agenda for Swedish Production (SIO Production)´. The underlying motivation for this is the high potential to increase efficiency as well as effectiveness and sustainability in the products and their realization processes.

Product innovation is a wide concept covering all industrial activities needed to bring an identified market need or a new product idea to a successful commercial product that fulfills the economical goals of a company as well as the customers´ expectations. Product and production system development are key activities in this process. In this project new innovative models, development methods and work procedures to improve this ´realization part´ of the innovation process will be addressed. The improvement should be done by executing virtual product and production development activities in parallel during the realization process, and with close collaboration and exchange and reuse of information and knowledge. A sustainable product or process outcome in terms of risk, costs, environmental impact and life cycle stakeholder satisfaction (= quality) can then be secured. An enabling strategy is to use an integrated and flexible virtual development environment based on a new type of reusable and configurable system elements in a development platform. The environment should contain knowledge about both the product itself but also about production systems and method support used in the development. This will shorten the development process, improve product quality and reduce the need of costly physical testing and try-outs.
