Fixtures with a nerve

Project time: 2015 – 2016

Budget: 750 000 kronor

The purpose is to answer issues on how fiber optic sensors, integrated in fiber composites, behave over time when subject to different load cases in varying temperature and humidity.

Fixtures made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) offer a unique possibility to integrate functionality in the structure. One example is fiber optic sensors, being extremely sensitive to strain, and therefore suitable for health monitoring. This project aims at providing answers on how the reliability in such systems is affected over time, being exposed to different environments and mechanical loads. The project therefore gives value adding functionality to the fixtures, increasing their robustness and reliability, providing valuable indirect quality data.
