Sustainable milling with Minimum Quantity Lubrication

Project time: 2022 – 2024

Budget: 4 700 000 sek

Funding: SIP Produktion2030

The project hopes to facilitate the introduction of MQL for milling in industrial processes.

The project “Sustainable milling with minimum lubrication” deals with minimum lubrication (MQL). MQL can help reduce environmental impact, achieve a significant cost reduction in the long term and provide better working conditions for operators. The previous project “Design of a test bed for sustainable milling with minimum quantity lubrication” was financed by Vinnova FFI in his call for proposals in June 2020 and ended on 2021-05-31. This resulted in a detailed study of the research front for MQL in milling and the design of a test bed for MQL in milling. Although MQL is well proven in hole-making processes, its use in milling processes is still very limited in the industry. The project aims to facilitate the introduction of MQL for milling in industrial processes. In addition, the latest research in a literature study shows promising economic and sustainability benefits of implementing MQL in milling processes. This project proposal aims to validate previous discoveries in processing tests in the test bed and industrial tests in the industrial partner’s production facility. This will help to create a basic performance evaluation of MQL during milling. coordinator and principal applicant and KTH Industriell Production (IIP) as a research partner. The following companies will be involved in the project: Accu-Svenska AB,Ionbond AB, Leax AB, Sandvik Coromant AB and Volvo Group. The project is planned for 24 months with a total project budget calculated at SEK 4700000.
