The last day of application has already passed.

The course focuses on the relation among manufacturing, metrology/characterization and function of various engineering surfaces.

Aim

The course aims to provide a deeper understanding of concepts and applications of random, stratified, textured- and multi-scale surfaces – how to measure, analyse and quantify them in the context of function and manufacturing issues towards a sustainable realisation of surface structures. Fundamental concepts of contact and non-contact metrology technologies form the input to various areal characterisation methods for feature description and scale dependent characterisation techniques like fractal- and area scale methods in accordance with the recent ISO 25178-2 standard.

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course the course participant should be able to

Course content

The course focuses on the relation among manufacturing, metrology/characterization and function of various engineering surfaces. Case studies of different applications are included. Metrology: Interferometer, Light Scattering, Laser Scanner, Waviness Measuring System, Stylus, Tactile Elastometric System

Characterization: Wavelets, Scale-sensitive fractal analysis, Sara trees, Traceology via Hough/Radon transform, Classification/Rating methods.

Course organisation

The course includes four parts; 1. Individual preparations before course start; 2. 3-days at Halmstad University with a combination of lectures, seminars, and hands-on activities (access to the Halmstad “Rydberg Laboratory” for practical surface characterisation and functional testing); 3. Individual work to prepare before examination; 4. Examination seminar.

Examination

A successful completion of this course will be evaluated on the following:

Fee for late drop-out

This course is included in the Produktion2030 program, and it is therefore free of charge for PhD student members of Graduate School Produktion2030. However, in case of drop-out later than 3 weeks before course start, a fee of 1 000 SEK per course credit will be charged the student’s home institution.
